The first piece of equipment that any offshore boater should acquire is a good VHF radio and antenna set up. In an emergency, a VHF radio is the lifeline between an endangered vessel and rescue personnel. More lives have been saved by VHF radios than any other piece of electronic safety equipment. Another function of of VHF radio is to give mariners active weather and hazard reports. Most VHF radios on today's market feature Digital Selective Calling Capability. This is primarily an automatic distress reporting function that triggers an alarm on all other VHF radios in the receiving area. Boaters and fisherman can get the most out of DSC with a simple interface between the onboard GPS and the radio. When DSC is activated, the vessels position will be incorporated into the distress call. Satellite phones, broadband units, single side side band, loudhailers, and cellular amplifiers are other communication systems available to today's boaters and fisherman. The advances in cell phone technology have left many mariners questioning the need for a dedicated VHF radio. The United States Coast Guard does not advocate the use of cellular phones for emergency use. In the event of an on the water emergency, the USCG and every other vessel in the vicinity will hear a VHF distress communication. Every Licensed Captain is required to lend all possible assistance. Often times the difference between life and death is other boats in the vicinity.
Hooksetter Supply offers a full selection of VHF marine radios, satellite phones, hailers, antennas, and related accessories. Top brands and manufacturers such as ICOM, Standard Horizon, Uniden, Northstar, Furuno, Garmin, Digital Antenna, and more are available.
