The first piece of equipment that any offshore boater should acquire is a good VHF radio and antenna set up. In an emergency, a VHF radio is the lifeline between an endangered vessel and rescue personnel. More lives have been saved by VHF radios than any other piece of electronic safety equipment. Another function of of VHF radio is to give mariners active weather and hazard reports.
Most VHF radios on today's market feature Digital Selective Calling Capability. This is primarily an automatic distress reporting function that triggers an alarm on all other VHF radios in the receiving area. Often times the difference between life and death is other boats in the vicinity.
